Right after graduating from art school, Tim Burton made this short animation inspired by the life of Vincent Price, famous film noir and thriller actor, whom Burton felt like he could closely relate. Both dark and whimsical, "Vincent" sets the tone of Burton's future animations and feature-length films.Pallaoro's 2009 short film was part of her MFA work at CalArts in the directing program. It beautifully examines the relationship between a mother and her son and the space they've cultivated together. This is a great example of lighting, composition, set design, sound design and directing! "WunderKammer" is a powerful 10 minutes. This 1902 French silent film has paved the way for many experimental and narrative filmmakers with its innovative use of theatrical special effects, camera-dissolves, original hand-painting, and science fiction! Méliès created a fantastical narrative satirizing European nationalism and colonialism, wrapped up in visually-delicious costumes and set design, appealing to many generations of film enthusiasts! Definitely worth checking out this early classic for some inspiration!
You really need to watch this film twice to fully understand this film: once to get over the shock and a second time to understand the thing. A strange space traveler meets with a metaphor for the past and is foiled by a simile of the future. The esthetic of the film is something that really stands out, especially inside the space ship. The contrast of the spaces and atmospheres are truly magnificent. As for the story, well, you are going to have to figure that out on your own.
https://vimeo.com/128691690 This film is about the evolution of the wheel throughout the years. It is made by the very talented Tony Hill. Born in London in 1946, Tony Hill studied Architecture and Sculpture and makes experimental short films that are somewhere between sculpture and cinema. He has been working as an independent film-maker since 1973, usually taking on all aspects of production and often developing and building his own equipment. He also works with installations, photography and sound. Wow! That's a mouthful! And if you were at the event then you probably got a mouthful of pizza and some really cool short experimental films. It was awesome to see you guys at Frierson's event and we hoped you learned something new about experimental film and that you will come back to our next event. I can promise you, it'll be even better!
This is, by far, one of the most entertaining and oddest short films I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. The vivd colors and the poppy soundtrack all add to the spectacle that is…this. But, the true question is: What is going on here? Well, we don’t know, and frankly, possibly no one knows, not even the filmmaker. That’s the cool part about experimental film: It doesn’t need to mean something. Sometimes you can just have and make a film for the sake of having or making a film…and this is a pretty good film.
What’re your thoughts on this film and, if you had to make up a meaning for it, what would it be? INPUT/OUTPUT from Terri Timely on Vimeo.
This film is one of my favorites! As a lover of compositing and effects “Plain Sight” really hits home on how invisible and visible compositing can be. The filmmaker overlays still images on top of video and uses perspective to reveal the seams. Extremely interesting and Inventive!
Check it out and tell us how you would use this effect (or others like it) in your own experimental films! Plain Sight from mustardcuffins on Vimeo.
The "Rise and Fall of Globosom” is a polished experimental animation film about, well, the rise and fall of a civilization. Without any words or narration the filmmaker goes through all the stages of evolution through a entire species on a single planet, underlaying topics of greed, love, riches, technology and eventually the apocalypse. Interestingly, this entire film is only a little over five minutes. Who knew that you could put so much into such a little video!?
Check it out and see if you can name all the topics the filmmaker brings up in his film! |
